Mekong by Marigold does such a beautiful justice to its name. There is an underlying thought which transverses boundaries with the name alone. Named after the river which flows through six countries, Mekong by Marigold brings with it the culinary tales as it travels the course of the river bringing a true pan-Asian fare. Sushi, Thai, Burmese, Vietnamese, they all find a place on the menu at Mekong.

We had a preview of the re-launched Burrp! App. The Chef’s table at Mekong had been arranged by Burrp! in association with FBAI. I remember the times when it was the only app which I could fire up to search for restaurants to visit. Those times it was a leader and a platform where I’d gradually started writing reviews too. Burrp! now under Network 18 has been seamlessly modified to get back to where it was and truthfully I quite liked the new UI.


The Chef’s table had been elaborately planned to include the best of what Mekong had to offer. We started off with the Yam Taohu which was a light salad of green vegetables, silken tofu and straw mushroom in chilly jaggery lime dressing. The chilly jaggery and Lime deliciously balanced the flavors as the dish tip-toes on the likes of spice, sweet and sour tastes.

Sushi is where our hearts lie and that’s where Mekong’s strength lies too. The Ikura Gunkan Maki is freshness personified. Capped off with fresh salmon roe, this was the stand-out dish of the night. The Oshinko Maki brought with it the crunch of radish and bell pepper.

I’ve always liked having sips of Jasmine tea between my courses coz it helps clean out the palate between courses and I was glad the service staff didn’t falter on filling up on the tiny teacup. Among the starters that night the Hanoi Toi Tom which comes with tossed in a delectable garlic sauce was the best of the lot.

As we gradually made our way through to the main course, I settled over my plate of Lamb Massaman Curry. The Thai Massaman curry is rich in flavors and relatively rich, tracing its roots and inspiration back to Persia. The best way to enjoy a good Massaman curry is to have it with a simple jasmine rice where all its flavors burst through. The Gai Pad Bai Gaprow (Thai style mince chicken with chilly basil) and Curries Crab made for enjoyable accompaniments.

The night ended over some good conversations with the Burrp! Team over a plate of desserts consisting of a Dates Cigar, Coconut Jaggery ice-cream and the heavenly Thap Thim Krawp. Mekong isn’t just any other Pan-Asian restaurant but one where a lot of thought has been given to design the food along the name it has to live up to.

As you enter Kurries & Burries, the first thing you notice is the café’s simple decor. The café is small and overtly crowded with teenagers, couples and families. Situated down the road from Wilson College, a group at the next table are busy taking selfies.  Throughout our time at the outlet of Kurries & Burries, not a single table had been left empty with one group outpouring onto a table soon as it vacated. The line outside was impressive enough to justify the popularity that is Kurries & Burries.

Kurries & Burries is what I would describe elevating amateur food to restaurant quality. There is passion which bursts forth in the food for a café that prides itself to be the only outlet in Mumbai serving Asian and Mexian food under the same roof. It might sound strange to be operating two significantly pole apart cuisines under one roof but it surprisingly works at Kurries & Burries.

Orders had been taken swiftly and I got to sit down with Kushal Todi, the mastermind behind the outlet to pick his brain till the food arrived. K&B started out as an ambitious project which was later turned over into a full-fledged business model. They make their own curries and pastes and almost all the recipes are developed by Kushal’s mom and then innovated by the chefs. Each dish is under development and tested for 3 months before being launched. But to reform an idea into reality, needs a whole dose of passion and courage. And the talk with Kushal reaffirmed that passion does drive a brand with an outlet being jam-packed in 3 months of existence.

The orders had started to arrive one by one to our table. Sipping on the Mango Mocktail, and I could finally give a sigh of relief. The sigh of having traveled a distance and then handed the best refreshing drink is like heaven on earth. The perfect amalgamation of Pineapple and Mango pulp makes it work wonderfully in sync together in a glass. With each sip that you take, you get a flavor of Mango which is followed by a tint of Pineapple feel hitting your taste buds. The good amount of crushed nuts topped on the drink gives u something further to munch with each sip that you have.

Do good things come packed in Tortillas? Yes they very much do and you’ll have one of the most amazing ones right at Kurries & Burries. The Mex-Wich is outstanding.  That’s the super-awesome package of Mexican Beans, Salsa, Sour cream, Paneer marinated in Mexican Sauce, crushed Nacho Chips all sandwiched together between a Tortilla feels like. Ohh Wait! It isn’t over yet as the Mex-Wich is grilled & deep fried and then covered with Cheese Sauce & topped with Salsa, Sour cream and served with Mexican sauce on the side to go by. It’s the hottest selling dish and absolutely ‘Delicioso’.


The Crackled Spinach Chilly Paneer turned out to be pretty average. The Paneer was good but there was too much oil coz of the deep fried cottage cheese and spinach. The Thai Green Curry arrived at the table and completed the order for the evening. A perfect medley of vegetables, lemongrass in a beautiful delicate broth of coconut milk with the perfect blend of spices and went perfect with a bowl of rice.

I left Kurries & Burries with a pleasant smile. To actually have a complete vegetarian meal and walk out content seldom happens with us and Kurries & Burries, I must say you hit a sweet spot. The pricing is extremely economical and students get a special discount too during weekedays. Mexican And Asian never felt so good under one roof.

If we had to classify the Chinese here in Hyderabad, we’d end up doing a 3-tier listing of them. Firstly there is those top-tier classy, fancy restaurant. Then comes the mid-class, everyday dropping, too much leaning on the Indo-Chinese restaurants. They are not so fancy but also not very shabby either. Last in the line are the local Chinese vendors on the streets. There is one such cart in every colony and street and be sure that they use a copious amounts of local flavors.

Urban Asia in Hyderabad falls among the top-tier ones and it has maintained it’s position that way. One of the few consistently performing, superbly delicious food and highest benchmark in service are to be found at Urban Asia. The moment you enter through the doors of Urban Asia, you know that you are in the right place and setting. There is whole level of activity, enticing aroma of food in the air and lively music which loosens those nerves and gets them going.

Located on Rd No. 36 Jubilee Hills, in the building housing other such stalwart restaurant, Urban Asia has created for itself a niche position for itself in the hearts of many diners. There is a myriad of options on the menu including it being one of the few places serving Sushi. The menu isn’t fixed to one country and cuisine alone and actually is a journey through the South Asian countries and their cuisine. So there is always something for everyone according to the choice.


What’s Titillating?

The soups are absolutely exquisite with the Burnt Garlic Soup being the winner among them. If you are a lover of Sushi, then go ahead and give them a shot. They are the best in Hyderabad. None of the rice and noodles on their menu cease to amaze and go very well with the curries and gravies. The staff are also well-trained with their suggestions. They do make a killer Pad Thai and Salt and Pepper Prawns.

What’s Unsatisfying?

Having had already almost most of the items on the menu, the only dish which hasn’t appealed a lot has been the Yin Yan Soup. The flavors are very faint and though should be subtle is understandable, it does go below par at times.

Will We Go Back?

Yes, Absolutely Yes. With Food so good, there is no looking back at all and thus multiple visits follow.

The FD Meter: If the Chinese ever said Cha-Ching then it will be ringing a 4.5/5.0
